How to Make Cleaning and Organizing Your Natick Home’s Basement Easy

Make your basement usable space in just five steps!

Basements seem to collect clutter in ways no other area in the home does. If your basement is looking a little messy and unorganized, it could actually deter potential buyers.

But, don’t worry. These simple steps can help you regain control of your basement so it’s another usable space for your family and so your home is more attractive to buyers.

Step 1: Sort Through Everything

Start by going through everything in your basement and dividing it into three piles: “keep,” “throw away” and “donate.” Everything that is in your basement should be categorized.

After you have done this step you will only have to work with the items that you want to keep, which will make your job much easier.

Step 2: Deep Clean the Rooms

Now is the perfect time to give your basement a deep clean to make it more pleasant to use and so it looks better during open houses. Clean everything from the walls to the floors and the furniture to the baseboards.

Doing a deep clean will ensure that once you are done, your basement will be more than just organized, it will be fresh and clean.

Step 3: Implement an Organization System

Now that the rooms are clean and you have rid the space of things that don’t need to be there, you need to implement an organization system. Look at the things you have left and decide what you need to keep things organized. Use things like shelves, bookcases, filing cabinets, cubbies or drawer systems to give everything in your basement its own spot.

You can also use this time as a chance to put things where they go if they belong elsewhere in your home. If you find things that have an organized space upstairs, move them now.

Step 4: Give the Room an Identity

While you are organizing your basement, give each room an identity. Decide what each room will be used for, and then add the proper organization systems and furniture. Doing this will also add value to your home and make it more attractive if you are planning on listing your Natick home for sale. Buyers will be attracted to your home because it will have a usable basement and more rooms, like bedrooms, an office or an entertainment room.

Step 5: Stick to a System

Now that your basement is organized, stick to your organization systems and continue to use the rooms for what you have designated them for, and not just extra storage space. Keeping your basement in check will make it a more pleasant space for your family and add more features you can highlight as you sell your home.

Cleaning and organizing your basement will help you add living space to your home, get more out of your basement and make it more attractive to potential buyers.
