New England States Connect on Tolls

Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine connect on toll violations.

Recent news from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is that Massachusetts has announced toll violation reciprocity with Maine and New Hampshire.

The repercussions of the agreement allow the RMV to non-renew registrations and licenses of violators who have not paid their violation.

The good news is that this will not blindside you as the RMV will send a letter to your home if a violation has occurred, if it is paid within 30 days there are no other issues. If the violation is not paid within 30 days surcharges and administration fees are applied and there is a longer process to clear the violation.

If you seldom travel to ME or NH this may not be a worry but if you have adventuresome children or are often vacationing in Maine - this is your heads up!

Many Registry changes are often not highly publicized and due to cost cutting measures, the notification of license renewals have stopped. Be sure to check the expiration on your license and your car registration or you may be denied your favorite glass of wine, or worse, your car could be impounded at a traffic stop!!!
