When Will the Last Atrium Mall Stores Close?

Bulfinch Cos. has purchased the mall and will be converting it into medical offices.

Five months after Needham-based Bulfinch Cos. purchased the Atrium Mall in Newton, there are just a few more breaths of retail life left in the shopping center.

Patch received a few questions from readers about the property in the last week, and decided to look into the status of the Atrium Mall.

According to Tina Snyder, director of marketing for Bulfinch, there are three stores left in the mall: Janie and Jack, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn.

Pottery Barn will close at the end of January, Synder said, and Janie and Jack will be vacating on Jan. 4. Restoration Harware will close at the end of 2012.

Cheesecake Factory is also still open, however, the future of the restaurant is still a question mark. Synder could not confirm when the restaurant would be closing or if it would stay open through Bulfinch's renovation of the property.

Once it closes at the end of the year, Pottery Barn will be moving across Route 9 to The Street (formerly the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center), where owner WS Development is adding new retail/restaurant space.

According to Synder, Restoration Hardware has plans to move to a new location in downtown Boston.

Bulfinch purchased the 300,000-square-foot Atrium Mall from Simon in July 2012 and announced its plans to convert it into the Atrium Center at Chestnut Hill, an office and medical campus.

The Atrium will undergo a facelift and some interior renovations before it reopens as the Atrium Center. However, Snyder could not provide details on a timeline for the project.

A virtual tour of the new Atrium Center is available online.

The Atrium Mall first opened in 1989 with four floors of retail and a number of anchor restaurants. Over the last year, the mall has emptied out, with its retail shops closing up for good or relocating to other nearby shopping centers such as The Street, the Mall at Chestnut Hill and Chestnut Hill Square.
