Farmers' Market Looks To Bolster Local Agriculture

Wellesley will have a summer farmers' market at the new Whole Foods.

With warm weather approaching and a brand new state-of-the-art on Washington Street, volunteers are getting ready for a summertime tradition often reserved for city landscapes.

The market will host a weekly farmers' market beginning May 10. The organic grocer will only be providing parking lot space for the stands and tables; this market is a locally driven effort.

The core of the market will included stands from five farmers, an orchard, a creamery, a florist and products from local producers, according to volunteer Phyllis Theermann.

“Part of the aim of the market is to develop a more sustainable community and to support local agriculture,” Theerman said.

The farms represented are located in communities around Massachusetts. They include Harvard, Groton, South Deerfield, Sherborn and Salisbury, Theerman said.

The project is a collaboration among the Wellesley-based , property manager Gravestar, Inc. and local volunteers, according to Theerman.

Beginning May 10 the three-season market will be open every Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. through October.
