Newton-Wellesley Hospital is among the top hospitals in the state and in the top 10 among Boston Metro-area hospitals.

That's according to the latest U.S. News and World Report national hospital rankings, in which Massachusetts General Hospital came in as the No. 2 hospital in the country, second only to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Newton-Wellesley ranked as the No. 12 hospital in the state and No. 10 among Boston Metro-area hospitals. Those rankings areimprovements from last year's rankings, in which Newton-Wellesley ranked No. 16 in the state and No. 13 among Boston Metro-area hospitals.

While Newton-Wellesley didn't make the national list or place any specialities in the national rankings, it did achieve "high-performing" status in four specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, orthopedics, and urology.

The survey looked at 5,000 hospitals nationwide to rank the best in 16 adult specialties including the four already mentioned as well as cancer, gynecology, psychiatry, orthopedics and others. Only 147 hospitals received national rankings in one or more specialities.

Factors considered for the survey included death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation, among others.

Though it didn't rank nationally, Newton-Wellesley did achieve high marks in patient satisfaction, with 81 percent of patients saying they would recommend Newton-Wellesley Hospital to their friends.
