Former congressman Robert Wexler to speak on Middle East peace at Temple Beth Elohim

Robert Wexler, a former congressman and current president of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, will provide insight into the state of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in the context of the unfolding regional dynamics in a discussion about "Prospects for Peace and Security for Israel" at Temple Beth Elohim [10 Bethel Rd., Wellesley] on Monday October 21 at 7:30 pm.

Wexler will discuss the critical role American leadership plays in the Middle East, as demonstrated by Secretary of State John Kerry's intensive diplomatic efforts to achieve a two-state solution. 

The presentation will be in the format of a conversation between Rep. Wexler and Dr. Larry Lowenthal, the former Boston-area executive director of the American Jewish Committee and current adjunct professor at Northeastern University. The audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

The Honorable Robert Wexler represented Florida's 19th district for seven terms as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives before joining the S. Daniel Abraham Center in 2010. In Congress, Wexler served as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Europe and was also a member of its Middle East Subcommittee. He traveled on numerous congressional delegations to the Middle East and met with the leaders of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Kuwait, Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman. Wexler was named to the Congressional Quarterly’s list of the “50 Most Effective Legislators in Congress” and the “Forward 50” list of the most influential leaders in the American Jewish community. During the 2008 presidential campaign, he advised then-Senator Barack Obama on issues related to Israel and the Middle East, was a member of President Obama's National Security Advisory Committee for the 2012 reelection campaign, and served on the Platform Drafting Committee for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He holds a B.A. from the University of Florida and a J.D. from George Washington University.
