Today, March 22, is World Water Day. We're revisiting the work of Wellesley College's Marianne Moore, associate professor of biological sciences, who studies Russia's Lake Baikal, the world's oldest and largest freshwater lake.
In this video, filmed in 2011, Moore and students talk about an experiment they conducted designed to test a saying from Russia that says, "if the Mafia wants to hide a body, they just throw it in Lake Baikal."
This summer, Moore and Wellesley College senior Katie Wright will be among 15 scientists from five US universities who will travel to Lake Baikal for two months of field and lab research. Their goals are to quantify the lake's biodiversity at the taxonomic, genetic, and functional levels, and to gauge how Lake Baikal will adapt to climate change.
