At least one Wellesley-ite was on hand Thursday as Hollywood stars used Natick businesses as sets to shoot a film based on the Abscam scandal.
Using locations on Rte. 135 in Natick, Hollywood stars filmed an unnamed David O. Russell film about the 1970s Abscam scandal that will star Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Dottie Intinarelli lives on Stacey Street, just a few hundred feet from the set in Reliable Cleaners. The film's production crew paid Intinarelli and her neighbors $200 to park in front of their homes. "I took the day off of work to see if I could see Jeremy Renner, he is my favorite actor," Intinarelli said. Sara Berry from Wellesley visited in hopes of getting a glimpse of Jennifer Lawrence. Screening of a documentary featuring a Wellesley couple and their rescue of a Jewish child from Germany in 1939 in Boston, March 13.
The story of a Wellesley couple rescuing a child from Germany in 1939 is beign retold in a documentary to be screened within the week. The film is "Two Who Dared: The Sharps' War," which is playing at the Boston Public Library's Central Branch in Copley Square, Boston on March 13, at 7 p.m. It's a free event, and is followed by a panel discussion with Artemis Joukowsky III, the director of the film and Catherine Vakar Chvany, a woman who was rescued by the Sharps as a child. Joukowsky is also a grandson of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, the couple who traveled to Europe as representatives of the American Unitarian Association, who were assigned to provide aid to refugees fleeing the Nazis. Area Jewish film festival sets Wellesley resident Denise Widman as its president.
A nearby annual Jewish film festival is under new leadership, and that new leader comes from Wellesley. The Boston Jewish Film Festival (BJFF), which screens films on Jewish themes throughout the year, recently elected Denise Widman, a Wellesley resident, as its new President. She worked previously as the organization's vice president, and has been involved with the organization for about 10 years. "The festival is a perfect fit for me as it combines my passion for film with my love of Jewish life," says Widman in a press release (see PDFs). Widman takes over from Joyce Pastor, who will remain on the BJFF board of directors. This information has been included. --- Wellesley was certainly well-represented in this year's Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, with over 110 students bringing in awards this time around. At Wellesley High School, 43 students took home 51 awards, including 13 Gold Key Awards, 13 Silver Key Awards and 16 Honorable Mentions, according to a spreadsheet released on the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards website, and a story on Boston.com's YourTown Wellesley. Newhouse Center bringing science fiction writers, experts and films to Wellesley College this weekend.
This Weekend, a science fiction convention is coming to Wellesley. It will be at Wellesley College and will focus on literature, although there may not be costumes. The event kicks off Friday night with a keynote speech, and panels and programs continue all day Saturday and into Sunday. The screening of "Cloud Atlas" is also on the slate. The theme of the conference, according to a press release from the college, is dystopia, utopia and how those are used nationally in literature. "Science fiction has become increasingly a global genre in the sense that deep down, in our imagination of the future history, no nation could stand alone,” said Mingwei Song in the press release. Congressman Joe Kennedy III, who represents Wellesley in the Mass. 4th District, announced last week his office is participating in the annual Congressional Art Competition, a high school visual arts contest. Now through April 19, 2013, high school students in the Fourth Congressional District can submit paintings, drawings, collages, computer-generated art, prints, mixed media and photography pieces to Kennedy's office on Crafts Street in Newton. An independent arts panel that includes several artists and art professionals from across the Fourth District will select a finalist for each media category.
