Wellesley is the first community in Massachusetts to be considered a Green Powered Community by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Massachusetts State Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan Jr. announced the honor at a meeting last week.

In Wellesley, 4.12 percent of community-wide electricity is considered “green power.”

For a town to earn the designation, at least 3 percent of electricity used community-wide must be considered “green power,” according to a statement on the town website, which is electricity generated from renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas and low-impact hydropower. 

Wellesley is the second community to earn the designation in New England.
