District 11 to decide champion this week while nine Wellesley natives compete in clay court championships.
After reaching the semifinals of the District 11 Little League All-Star tournament last season, the Wellesley North all-star squad is back looking for more this summer.
"Last year our team lost in the semifinals," said Wellesley manager John Dolan.
"We had a lot of 11-year-olds on the team, almost over half the team so a lot of these kids have been here."
That experience showed as Wellesley rolled through its first three Pool 1 tournament games, outscoring its opponents 10-3 while going undefeated and clinching a spot in Wednesday's quarterfinal playoff round.
After opening up with a 4-3 win over Medfield, Wellesley won back-to-back games, shutting out both Walpole National (2-0) and Needham American (4-0) thanks to some outstanding efforts on the mound.
Jack Dolan and Brian Creonte combined to twirl a no-hitter against Walpole then Chris Hart and Ghi Ho Ghim combined to two-hit Needham.
"Our pitching and defense has been fantastic and we're getting a lot of contributions from all parts of the lineup," said Dolan.
Dolan hopes this is the team to end the short drought since Wellesley last represented the District in the sectionals. Members of the team include Dolan, Creonte, Hart, Ghim, Robbie Cronin, James Fadule, Michael Rosen, Will Cramer, Matt Eldridge, Charlie Greenwood, Garrett Doyle, Erik Prakken and Grant Chryssicas.
"It's a very tough district," said Dolan. "Walpole has been outstanding, Norwood is usually outstanding, Westwood is very good but we're hoping."
Wellesley North isn't the only Wellesley team at the top of the Pool standings either as Wellesley South trails only undefeated Walpole American in Pool 2.
"We've got another very good Wellesley team," said Dolan. "We're hoping to maybe see them in the playoffs. We split it up but we are all in the same league in the regular season so we are pulling hard for them and they've done very well."
Both teams wrap up Pool play today (Sunday) with South taking on Norfolk at 10 a.m. and North facing Westwood at 2:30.
While the Little Leaguers take Monday and Tuesday off to prepare for the Wednesday-Friday's Playoff rounds, nine Wellesley tennis players will be hard at work, taking part in the Herb Schachter Memorial New England JR. Clay Court Championships at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
Ilya Levin, Christopher Cua, Joshua Suneby and Conor Haughey will all be competing in the Boys' under-18 draw, while Sam Lapides will be taking part in the U-16 draw. All five players play opening round matches today (Sunday) with winners advancing to Monday's round of 16.
Maggie Psyhogeos will represent Wellesley in the girls' U-16 draw. Seeded third in the tournament, Psyhogeos earned a first-round bye and will play her first match at 8 a.m. Monday against the winner of today's match between Francesca Garofalo of Norwalk, Conn., and Sunday Swett of Bow, NH.
Fifth-seeded Stephanie Simon, 7th-seeded Ashley Avery, and Courtney Day are all taking part in the Girls' Under-12 draw with preliminary rounds at the Northeast Tennis Club. Simon received a first-round bye and will take on the winner of today's match between Canton's Jacqueline Nannery and Lauren Pingree of Cromwell, Conn., at 8 a.m. Monday at Northeast Tennis Club. Avery and Day both open competition this afternoon with first round matches against Essex' Micayla Casella and North Reading's Caroline Templer.
