The Advent of 'My' Media

Archer takes us inside of the state of media in 2011.

As of I still wasn’t sure what common links would arise when talking to local experts about trends in the media. Now that I have a couple interviews in the can, it’s become clear.

Whether you’re talking about the future of television, news, or advertising, it’s all about speed, personalization, and interactivity. These three things are the driving considerations behind the advancement of all media today.

Television:

Speed – Fiber optic cables, faster processors, and better compression algorithms have allowed huge (high quality) files to be compressed, streamed, and shared faster than ever.

Personalization – On-demand, menu driven content makes for a viewing experience that’s all about THE VIEWER.

Interactivity – With the blending of televisions and computers the old way of passive viewing will give way to embedded metadata within videos that allows viewers to click on products within a video to say, purchase a product or make a comment.

News:

Speed – Weekly and even daily publications are simply no longer fast enough for today’s audience. Twitter, Facebook, and Patch give the public moment-by-moment, real-time updates.

Personalization – First of all, two of the three sites I just mentioned are personal sites to begin with, and Patch is personal due to the fact that it’s hyperlocal. It’s intended to apply to YOU and your community.

Interactivity – These new models of information sharing are literally changing the world. People comment, share, and organize so effectively now that dictators have been toppled, scandals have been revealed, and some of the most stunning images from recent natural disasters have come from individuals with cell phones rather than reporters with camera operators.

My advertising interview has yet to be completed, but the focus will remain on these three key elements. I’m curious how speed, personalization, and interactivity play a role in the advertising industry today.

Feedback is always appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to send me your thoughts: erich@wellesleychannel.tv
