The Wellesley boys' lacrosse team has hit its stride at the right time.
The 11th-seeded Raiders picked up their eleventh straight win Saturday, scoring early and often to knock out 6th-seeded Foxboro with a 12-5 win in the first round of the Boys Lacrosse East Division 2 tournament.
"We had a good intense start," said Wellesley coach Rocky Batty. "We executed early and we've been talking about execution all year."
Though they had an 8-2 lead going into the second half, the eleventh-seeded Raiders had to battle Foxboro to the very end.
"Foxboro is a great team," said Batty. "They didn't quit. We get up on most teams and they kind of walk away, but they played hard. That's a good, physical team."
Both teams played a physical game, but Wellesley's gameplan and execution led to a number of quality scoring chances.
"I think we were smart today and took advantage of good match-ups," said Batty.
"The guys on the field made good decisions and finished well."
Senior Alex Walkingshaw was able to take advantage of several of those opportunities, scoring six goals, including some impressive shots from the top of the offensive zone.
"Alex Walkingshaw threw the greatest knuckle ball I've seen in lacrosse history," said Batty. "He finished well."
Sophomore Peter Crane also played well, generating a lot of offense and scoring a goal of his own. Fellow sophomores Adam Horelick and Oliver Saffery each added a pair of goals.
Wellesley also took care of business in their defensive end. Despite giving up five goals, sophomore goalie Connor Darcey played well and kept the defense well organized.
"Darcey played a big game in the net," said Batty. "Our defense did the job and we executed."
As well as the Raiders played in the first two rounds, Batty acknowledged that the games will only get harder as they continue to make their way through their bracket, but execution will be key for his team.
"We have to get better now for the next game," said Batty. "Every game is tougher. If we execute we're ok."
Wellesley advances on to play a familiar tournament opponent in Medfield in the quarter finals.
"We have seen them, I want to say, seven years in a row in the tournament," said Batty. "The history is a long one. We used to knock them out of the tournament to get to a state championship and they've been knocking us out to have a chance at it. It's going to be a great game for both teams."
