No Cases of Pneumonia Found at Middle or High School

School Superintendent Bella Wong said there are new cases at the elementary schools and parents should still be watching for the flu-like symptoms of the infection.

There have been “a few” new cases of pneumonia diagnosed in elementary school students since a , but there has been no spread of the infection to students at the or schools, according to Superintendent Bella T. Wong.

Wong said last night that the new cases of mycoplasma pneumonia, also known as “walking pneumonia," should serve as a notice to all students to continue to take precautions such as frequent hand washing and making sure to cover your mouth when you cough, known as coughing etiquette.

She said an update will be e-mailed to parents at the end of the week.

Last week Wong and Health Department Director Lenny Izzo e-mailed a letter to parents alerting them to the outbreak in the elementary schools and asking that if their child exhibited any of the flu-like symptoms of the disease that they keep the child home from school and contact their pediatrician for an evaluation, alerting him or her that cases of pneumonia have been found in the Wellesley schools.

According to the letter, symptoms of walking pneumonia are typically fever, cough and fatigue, but can also include wheezing and shortness of breath, especially in children with asthma.
