Image Gallery: Wellesley Celebrates Flag Day

A large collection of flags were burned at Woodlawn Cemetery in celebration of Flag Day.

At yesterday, a large collection of flags were burned in celebration of Flag Day. A small crowd gathered to watch the very large pile of used flags be burned.

Wellesley’s Flag Day Ceremony was conducted in the traditional and proper way as suggested by the National Flag Foundation. The crowd watched as Stanley Spear of the West Suburban Veterans District and veteran John Sanders first called audience to attention, then ordered a salute, after which the crowd was told to uncover and place their hands over their hearts as they recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Finally, Spear asked Sanders in front of the nearly a dozen witness for permission to burn the flags. After confirming the flags had served their duty, Sanders proceeded to place the flags carefully in the fire. The ceremony finished once all of the flags were ash.
