In the first region-wide Best of Patch Readers' Choice contest we pitted local places where families could take a trip on the cheap.

Staycations have been something that families turn to during economic downturns in order to save money. The focus of a stacation is to spend time with family like you would on a vacation, but while staying home.

Everyone gets cabin fever sometimes though and because of that we wanted to help you get feedback from other Patch readers about where they like to go during their staycations.

Hopkinton State Park had a late surge this week and ended up capturing nearly half of the vote. 

The park is open year round to visitors, during the summer it's a great place to swim in the reservoir or go for a walk on the 1,400-acre grounds. In the winter snowmobiles can be seen throughout the park on the various trails.

There is a picnic area that can be reserved for parties of up to 200 people during the summer, so call your cousins and invite them over to your place for a staycation, just make sure they know when they've overstayed their welcome (no one wants 200 people trying to sleep on their couch).

While the park isn't free, at $5 a car it's cheaper and less aggravating than trying to find a spot in Boston, the money also goes directly to the park to help keep the amenities accessible.

If you've never visited the park it's easy to get to, take route 9 to route 85 in Southborough and head south for two miles. You can't miss it.

In second place this week was Framingham's Garden in the Woods receiving 25 percent of the vote.

Next week the poll will be returning to the local level so you can tell everyone in your town where the best place to pick up their favorite adult beverages. Just don't bring it to the park, alcohol isn't allowed.
