Firefighters Deal with Small Brush Fire Near Wellesley College

A section of Route 16 had to be closed Saturday as officials dealt with a small brush fire in the woods near Wellesley College.

A section of Washington Street had to be shut down for about two hours Saturday afternoon as Wellesley firefighters worked to extinguish a small brush fire.

The fire occurred at 848 Washington St. - specifically the wooded area near Wellesley College and police shut down the area just after 5 p.m. so that fire officials could access a hydrant, according to Jeffrey J. Peterson, deputy chief of the Wellesley Fire Department.

“It wasn’t a huge brush fire, but it did create some difficulties,” he said, referring to the two-hour road closure.

The fire was knocked down quickly and there was no damage to any nearby structures, Peterson said.

“It was accidental,” he said. “Of course with the rain we just got the risk of brush fire is reduced quite a bit.”
